Common Spa Repairs
"My spa will not heat at all"
This is the number one complaint we hear from spa/hot tub owners in San Diego County. It accounts for almost every repair that we see at Spectrum Pools.
OLDER SPAS: From our experience, after diagnosing a heating problem, the repair is most often minor involving the replacement of an inexpensive pressure switch, flow switch, or bad filter. However, with aging spas we frequently see that the heater element is the culprit. If the heater element appears to be burnt or damaged by improper water chemistry we can test it to see if it's still good. If it is bad then replacement is relatively inexpensive.
NEWER SPAS: Most Spas today come equiped with an electronic Controller which controls the pump, blower, and the heater. Most spa controllers have the heater built into them, so the spa controller is also the spa heater.
It's complicated, but basically the controller works together with the circuit board in regulating the power going to the heater and other components. By careful trouble shooting we can determine whether the controller, circuit board, or another electrical problem related to wiring is at fault.
Before replacing a bad circuit board with a new one we can also tell you if a cost effective repair might be possible.
"My spa is very slow to heat"
First thing we ask is the voltage 110 volts or 220 volts? The spa heats faster at 220.If it's 220 and it's taking 10 hours for their spa water to heat, we generally ask them to check for a dirty filter first. To make sure that it's not the filter causing the problem we ask them to run the spa in "standard heating mode" without the filter. At 220 volts the spa should heat up about 5 degrees an hour. If that doesn't resolve the problem we generally assume that it could be a bad thermostat or the high-limit switch which is turning off the heater too soon. That's an easy fix and not too expensive for parts.
As part of our service we also check the incoming voltage to the spa. If that's 220 we then check the voltage to the heater. If that's not 220 volts or it's low then the problem may be with a circuit board relay going to the heater.
"The GFIC breaker trips"
As we tell spa owners there are many causes for this but it commonly comes down to a short in one of the components, usually the heater, followed by a faulty blower, pump or ozonator. By the process of elimination we can determine if a component is at fault.
We also test for other causes beginning with the GFIC itself, loose or burnt wiring including visual evidence of a burnt circuit board.
NOTE: Diagnostic trouble shooting and repair is usually out of the capabilities of most spa owners. For safety reasons, including the possibility of electrocution and to prevent damage to the spa, this should only be attempted by qualified spa technicians familiar with all aspects of electrical components.
